How to Extend the Life of Your Gauge Wheels (And When to Replace Them)

Gauge wheels may not get much attention, but they play a big role in planting accuracy. Their job is simple: keep the row unit riding at the right height so seed depth stays consistent across the field.

When gauge wheels start to wear out, that consistency disappears.

Worn wheels can lead to uneven seed depth, row-unit bounce, and poor emergence. The good news is that with a little maintenance, you can keep your gauge wheels working longer and avoid problems during planting.

Check the Wheel Lip for Wear

One of the first places gauge wheels wear is along the rubber lip. As the edge thins or becomes rounded, it can allow soil to slip between the gauge wheel and the opener disc.

MudSmith Gauge Wheels are built with 20% thicker rubber, which helps the lip last longer and resist wear even in tough conditions.

Watch for Bearing Wear

Bearings are another common wear point. If the wheel begins to wobble or doesn’t spin smoothly, the bearings may be worn.

Traditional gauge wheels often require replacing the entire unit when this happens. MudSmith wheels use a cast iron hub with a replaceable bearing, allowing farmers to change the bearing in just a few steps.

Simply remove three bolts, press in a new bearing, and bolt it back together. That design saves time and reduces replacement costs over the life of the wheel.

Keep an Eye on Mud Buildup

Mud buildup is a common issue, especially in wet or heavy soils. Traditional closed wheels trap mud, which can cause them to drag instead of roll.

The MudSmith Spoked Gauge Wheel solves this with a patented open rim design that allows mud and debris to pass through the wheel instead of packing inside. This keeps wheels turning freely and reduces time spent cleaning them out.

Know When It’s Time to Replace

Even the best gauge wheels eventually wear out. If the rubber lip is badly worn, the hub is damaged, or the wheel no longer spins smoothly, replacement is the best option.

Built for Long-Term Performance

MudSmith Gauge Wheels are designed with durability and serviceability in mind. With thicker rubber, a modular design, and replaceable bearings, they’re built to last longer and require less maintenance in the field.
