MANITOBA — In a nod to Canadian agricultural innovation, Thunderstruck Ag Equipment’s new combine concave has been selected as one of TIME magazine’s 100 best inventions of 2025.
According to TIME, the variable concave design boosts harvesting speeds by 25 %, slashes grain loss, and cuts fuel consumption by up to 40 %, delivering significant time and cost savings for producers.
Manitoba-based Thunderstruck Ag released its ‘Razors Edge’ concave last year. The concave is installed in the front half of the threshing section of the rotor and as the rotor spins, the concave rubs and filters. Centrifugal force and airflow do the rest.
The concave separates grain from chaff using variable bar spacing that adapts dynamically to crop flow, maintaining optimal balance across diverse harvests like oats, barley, canola, sunflowers, soybeans and corn. Concave swaps between crops are reportedly a thing of the past for combines equipped with the innovation.
The recognition caps a banner year for the company. In July, the Razors Edge — made by Shoup Manufacturing of Illinois for Thunderstruck Ag — was celebrated as a breakthrough in the equipment category at Saskatchewan’s Ag in Motion show.
